~Discworld Update

If you have been pulling your hair out as much as I have because
of problems with the game, and are sick of hearing the words
"THAT DOESN'T WORK", I hope this update will be of use.

Discworld is a brilliant graphics adventure game; how could it
not be with the concept and humour of Terry Pratchett combined
with the versatility of some of Britain's best comedy talent
providing the voices with the added bonus of regional accents.

The weak link has been Psygnosis' inadequate testing prior to
release, as evidenced by the fact that they will now replace the
original CD free of charge for those people experiencing
problems, with their latest pressing which they are calling
Discworld 'The Directors Cut'. This version, at the moment,
requires no accompanying floppy disk, and to quote their words,
"Virtually all sound and graphic problems have been ironed out,
Rincewind's help notwithstanding".

What set me on this route of discovery was the frustration of
being able to reach the dragon summoning scene at the end of
ACT 1 and then be reset to the opening cut sequence, no matter
how I configured my PC!

Having received a copy of the new CD, what Psygnosis didn't tell
me was that saved games from the original CD cannot be loaded
into the new version.

Another difference, and the reason for writing this update, is
how ACT 4 of the new version is finished. The two invaluable
walkthru's provided via CHEET SHEETS suggest that all you need
to do to 'load' MAMBO THE DRAGON (M16) is to give him the lit
FIRECRACKER. I'm told this works for the original CD by a friend
who didn't experience the problems I did. With the new CD, you
need to revisit both the DUNGEON in the PALACE and the DWARF MINE
and use M16 with the HOT COALS in both locations, to load him
with hot potatoes! Having done this, on leaving the MINE, you are
automatically transported back to the SQUARE where the sequence
is as described in the walkthroughs.

Another time saving tip which is applicable to both versions:
Having passed through L-SPACE and returned to the PARK to find
yourself sleeping on the BENCH, don't try to catch the BUTTERFLY
before placing the FROG in the sleeping RINCEWIND'S mouth,
otherwise the BUTTERFLY will fly out of reach. The only way to
recover from this is to travel forwards and backwards through
L-SPACE again to reset the PARK location.

I hope this update is useful to CHEET SHEET readers.

Derek
