~Super Speed

A trio of quick tips - By Simon Burrows

` If you see a skull on the track and you are far enough in
` front to afford the luxury of stopping a while, wait next to
` it until it smiles, then quickly drive over it. It shouldn't
` take too long, but neither will it stay smiling too long so be
` quick! On the five times I have got one smiling I have been
` given a speed boost (which has made breaking fastest lap
` records easy) three times, and a score boost twice. Beware,
` though, DO NOT collect it when it is grimacing at you
` otherwise the devil will come and either reverse your controls
` or fuck up your acceleration. Also, beware of being pushed
` into a grimacing skull by other cars driving past as you are
` waiting for it to smile!

` When you have collected 4 spanners and get the chance to
` select an enhancement for your car, DO NOT choose the speed
` boost until you have first boosted your traction. If you
` don't abide by this rule you will usually be worse off than
` when you started because you will either need to use the brake
` far more often to get round all the corners, or keep crashing
` into the sides because you understeer on the corners at this
` new faster speed.

` On my visits to the garage I will, as a rule, get two traction
` boosts and one acceleration boost for every speed boost.

` On each track there are a number of set points where the
` bonuses will appear (ie, the spanners and 1000 pointers). If
` you work out where these are you can hang around them while
` you are ahead and wait to collect any bonuses which do appear.
` A good example of this is on track two. If you find yourself
` a long way ahead near the end of the last lap, stop just
` before you take that final left-bend as bonuses appear on the
` inside of there frequently. If you make sure you are facing
` the way you will need to go to finish the race while you wait,
` you will be ready to charge to the end of the lap as soon as
` the next placed car approaches. Remember that there can be
` only one bonus on the screen at one time, though, so there's
` no point waiting around for a bonus to appear if there's
` already one on the other end of the track!
