YOKOSUKA P1Y1 GINGA

THE YOKOSUKA P1Y1 GINGA (MILKY WAY) WAS A JAPANESE MEDIUM BOMBER USED BY THE
IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY LATE IN WORLD WAR TWO.  PRODUCTION BEGAN IN 1943 BUT
THE TYPE WAS NOT ACCEPTED FOR USE BY THE IJN UNTIL OCTOBER 1944.  A TOTAL
OF 1,098 WERE PRODUCED PRIOR TO THE END OF THE WAR AND WERE USED BY THE 
552nd, 752nd, 761st, 762nd, AND YOKOSUKA KOKUTAIS.  FIRST OPERATIONAL USE
IN FEBRUARY 1945 FROM BASES IN JAPAN.  P1Y1'S (CODE-NAMED FRANCIS BY THE
ALLIES) WERE ESPECIALLY ACTIVE IN THE OKINAWA CAMPAIGN.

SIMPLY COPY THE FILES INTO YOUR AOTP DIRECTORY AND WHENEVER THE PROGRAM
SAYS B6N YOU'LL GET A P1Y1 INSTEAD.  WHILE IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO EDIT
THE 'SHELL' FILES TO GET THE PLANE LABELED PROPERLY, I THOUGHT IT UNECONOMICAL
DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE FILES WHICH WOULD HAVE TO BE DOWN LOADED.  DELETE THE
FILES THEN YOU WANT TO GET THE B6N BACK.  NOTE THAT IF YOU LEAVE THE FILES
IN WHILE FLYING FOR THE U.S. YOU'LL ALSO FIGHT P1Y1'S INSTEAD OF B6N'S.
FOR HISTORICAL ACCURACY, ONLY LOAD THE P1Y1 FILES IN 1945 CAMPAIGNS.  
CONVENIENTLY, THE YOKOSUKA KOKUTAI IS PROVIDED FOR THE OKINAWA CAMPAIGN OF
AOTP.  

NOTES
THIS IS A BOMBER, AND FLIES LIKE ONE.  YOU'LL NEED FLAPS AND LOTS OF RUNWAY
TO GET OFF THE GROUND.  I ORIGINALLY CONFIGURED THE .FMD FILE TO REQUIRE
100% POWER, FLAPS, AND 90% OF THE RUNWAY, AND I WAS STILL OCCASIONALLY
STALLING OUT AND CRASHING.  REALISTIC PERHAPS, BUT I GUESSED MOST OF YOU WOULD 
PREFER TO WORRY ABOUT SURVIVING FIGHTERS AND FLAK RATHER THAN TAKING OFF.
ALSO REALISE THAT THE RANGE LISTED IS THAT OF THE B6N. GIVEN THE ANOMOLIES
INHERENT IN AOTP REGARDING RANGE AND THE MISSION SET-UP ROUTINES, IT DOESN'T
REALLY MATTER.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE KNOW WHAT A P1Y1 LOOKS LIKE, THE KI-83
USED IS PRETTY CLOSE.  THE P1Y1 IS JUST A LITTLE LARGER, BUT HAS A SMALLER
VERTICAL STABILIZER THAN THE KI-83.  THE P1Y1 ALSO HAS A GLAZED NOSE. THE
COCKPIT CANOPY IS NEARLY IDENTICAL. ALL IN ALL, FROM ANYTHING BUT CLOSE RANGE
YOU REALLY COULDN'T TELL THEM APART.

YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVING IN A P1Y1 ARE A LOT BETTER THAN IN A B6N OR D4Y.
KEEP YOUR FORMATION TIGHT AND HOPE YOUR NOSE AND TAIL GUNNERS ARE GOOD SHOTS.
